Post-medieval copper alloy finger ring with integral pipe tamper and seal matrix. The finger ring has a narrow hoop with a semi-circular section. The hoop widens out to meet a flat oval bezel on the top of the ring into which a fleur de lis motif is cast. It seems likely that this was also used as a seal matrix. At the bottom of the ring hoop a pipe tamper protrudes downwards. This is cast integrally with the ring and has a double collar at the junction of the ring. The tamper has an undecorated cylindrical section that flares slightly and terminates with a circular flat disc. T…

Copper alloy finger ring with a cut glass setting, probably post-medieval in date. The ring has a semi-circular sectioned hoop which rises up to a pointed bezel. The bezel is hollow on the back and contains a circular setting with a glass gem. The gem is clear glass and is rounded on top with small triangular shaped cut facets around the lower edge where the gem fits into the bezel. The hoop is undecorated and fairly worn. The ring measures 26.5mm in length, 22mm in width (across the hoop) and weighs 4.78g.

Copper alloy finger ring. The ring comprises a simple undecorated flat band measuring 5mm in width. The diameter of the ring is 22mm (it was probably worn by a man) and the thickness of the hoop is 1.5mm. The ring is difficult to date due to the lack of decoration and it probably dates to the post medieval period.

Copper alloy medieval or early post-medieval finger ring. The ring has a black letter inscription which appears to be the letters 'S MMMMMM' repeated 3 times around the circumference of the ring. It is possible that the letter M stands for 'Maria'. The ring dates to the 15th or 16th century. It weighs 3.74g and measures 23.6mm in diameter and 5.2mm in thickness.

Part of a copper alloy finger ring. Only the bezel and part of the hoop survive, measuring 21.5mm long from one end of the broken hoop to the other. The bezel is oval and flat and is 13.9mm wide measured across the hoop. It is engraved with a line round the edge and a design in the centre which appears to be a thistle with stylised curved leaves. The back of the bezel is curved and the hoop is undecorated. The hoop is 2.5mm thick. The breaks are worn and the metal has a smooth dark brown patina. This ring probably dates from the post medieval period.

A copper alloy twisted wire finger ring. One piece of plain wire is twisted into a double hoop and formed into an elaborate knot acting as a bezel. A second piece of wire which is twisted all along its length forms a frame round the bezel. It was probably gilded originally but there are no traces of this surviving. The metal is now light brown with only slight corrosion.
Geoff Egan writes: “Wire-wound finger rings became popular at the lower end of the market in the 15th or 16th century, and at least one large pin was bent into a circle, the spherical head serving as a stone”. I…

A copper alloy finger ring which is post medieval in date. The ring has a decorated hoop which is rectangular in section, but no bezel. The ring is circular, but has slight facets on the outer edge. It is decorated with deeply incised chevrons round the whole hoop. Each of the twenty three chevrons is incised on a separate facet. There is also a background of very fine incised lines, also in a chevron pattern with the lines meeting and forming cross hatching in the centre of the band. The inside of the band is plain and smooth. The metal is in good condition with only a few small areas…

A copper alloy finger ring in the form of a snake. The ring is 21.3mm long, 16.5mm wide and 14.5mm thick. It is in the form of a coiled snake made from a single strand of wire wound into a coil. The wire is D shaped in section except for the head of the snake which is flattened and wider. The eyes are represented by ovals and there is a lozenge pattern of the back of the head. Scales are marked along the whole of the snake but they have been worn away on the outward facing part of the wire. The ring is made of four turns of wire and then the tail of the snake runs up the outside of th…

A copper alloy finger ring which is probably post medieval in date. The hoop is D shaped in section and flares to form a wider bezel. The bezel is an interesting trilobed shape and has incised scroll-like decoration. Unfortunately this is now unintelligible because of the extensive wear on the ring. It is possible that the design was originally a buckle, which was a common style of finger ring in the eighteenth century (Bailey, 1997, “Detector Finds 3”). The ring has an even dark and glossy patina, which probably indicates that it was once tinned or silvered. The ring has a diamet…

A copper alloy finger ring from the post medieval period. The hoop of the ring is broken, but none seems to be missing. The hoop is narrow at the back (2.1mm wide) but quickly widens to form a bezel which is shield shaped, with three lobes at the top and bottom of the shield, and concave sides. On either side of the shield is a single flower, perhaps a rose. The ring is corroded and worn. If there was any decoration on the shield, it is no longer visible. The ring is 23mm long, 15.3mm wide at the bezel, and 10.5mm thick from front to back, the hoop being squashed. It has a dark brown …

A copper alloy finger ring fragment which is probably post medieval in date. It is 22.7mm long, 13.2mm wide and 3.7mm thick. The object is a little less than half of a finger ring with the bezel and shoulders surviving. The hoop is broken and the breaks appear to be old. The bezel is rectangular and has an oval hollow in it for the setting which is missing, though much white paste, presumably the glue, does survive. The hoop widens towards the bezel and there is a rectangular stop on each side of the bezel. This design suggests the post medieval date as it is not something commonly see…

British Museum Report:
"Date: 1700
Description: Gold mourning ring. D-shaped hoop. Inscribed to the inside 'S P obijt 20 June j700 aeta 28'. This inscription is followed by a maker's mark: 'M' in a rectangular punch. There are traces of black enamel within the lettering and the punch.
Discussion: Mourning rings were usually made in memory of a recently deceased relation. Often money was left in wills with which to have a ring commissioned for this purpose. The inscription translates to 'S P died on 20 June 1700 aged 28'. 'SP' are the initials of the deceased. The maker is uni…

2007 T405 The British Museum curator's report says: "Silver finger ring. Has a rectangular-shaped bezel with rounded corners. The centre of the bezel is decorated with a cross that has traces of black enamel. The shoulders extend from the top and bottom of the bezel and narrow to form the remainder of the hoop. To the back of the band is a split. There is foliate decoration on the shoulders. To the reverse of the bezel is an oval shape pattern formed of raised pellets; inside this appears to be three raised digits. Evidence from the unseen side of the bezel suggests that this ring dat…
