Silver bezel of a finger ring containing an orangey-red, cornelian, intaglio. The edge of the bezel is decorated by a line of triangles running round its bottom edge and the back by an engraved floral pattern. The intaglio depicts a winged male figure, probably Cupid, a large bunch of grapes and an animal, probably a hare. The intaglio would appear to be Roman, depicting Cupid, a bunch of grapes and a hare. The same combination can be seen on an intaglio from Bath (Henig 1978, 200 no.113) where cupid is holding a bunch of grapes and a hare is jumping up to reach it. On the present int…

Small gold ring with a d-shaped hoop. Inscribed on the inside "Thy light is my delight". There are very small traces of black enamelling present within the lettering. The style of the lettering is consistent with 17th century rings of this type. Posy rings were also used as love tokens, with the inscription remaining secret to all but the wearer.

Mourning rings were usually made in memory of a recently deceased relation. Often money was left in wills with which to have a ring commissioned for this purpose. The ma…

17th Century gold posy ring. Band consisting externally of ten circular bosses with corded borders. Between each boss on both sides of the band are smaller round knops. Gold puzzle ring in the form of two linked rings, now distorted, of square section, each with a twist at one point where there are also signs of wear.
