A post-medieval gold posy ring. A small thin band decorated on the exterior with a running scroll contain traces of the original white enamel; inscribed inside in capitals: BE + TRUE + IN + HART. The letters contain most of their original black enamel. A variant of this inscription is recorded by Joan Evans in the 1596 Harleian manuscript, and there are a number of versions of it in the BM.

Broken silver gilt posy ring inscribed on the inside with 'Be costant to the end', presumably meaning 'constant'. The inscription appears inlaid in gold now, but the entire ring was probably gilded to appear like the contemporary pure gold posy rings. The band is plain on the outside and D-shaped in cross-section. There appears to be a maker's mark on the inside of the hoop consisting of a serifed 'R' and a trefoil to the right of it, but it might also be the initials of the intended, or the committed! If it is a maker's mark, it comes before the Wedding Ring Act of 1855 which made it…

British Museum Report: "Date: 1700 Description: Gold mourning ring. D-shaped hoop. Inscribed to the inside 'S P obijt 20 June j700 aeta 28'. This inscription is followed by a maker's mark: 'M' in a rectangular punch. There are traces of black enamel within the lettering and the punch. Discussion: Mourning rings were usually made in memory of a recently deceased relation. Often money was left in wills with which to have a ring commissioned for this purpose. The inscription translates to 'S P died on 20 June 1700 aged 28'. 'SP' are the initials of the deceased. The maker is uni…

This small ring is formed of a simple plaited band. It is likely to be post-medieval in date, but in the absence of any parallels in the British Museum, there is no evidence to confirm that it is more than 300 years old. Consequently, as the ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring of Post-Medieval or Modern date (Post AD 1500). Outer diameter 21.1mm, inner diameter 17.3mm and 4.2mm in width. Weight 2.71g. The outer face of the hoop is convex and has two circumferential minor grooves, one close to each edge. Within the grooves there is an inscription with stops in the form of five pointed stars. However, due to wear and corrosion, the inscription is indeterminate. The inside of the hoop is slightly convex. The outer face of the hoop is worn and corroded, whereas the inside of the hoop is worn and smooth and has a mid…

Silver finger-ring (2007 - T402) Date: Probably Post Medieval 16th - 17th Century Description: The hoop of the silver finger-ring is oval in plan; being distorted from a probable circle by both wear and also movement in the ploughsoil. The finger-ring is broadly lentoid in cross section. The upper and lower edges are slightly faceted. The external face of the finger-ring has been damaged by abrasion, however, the decorative design and style is relatively complete. The decoration has been created by the use of neillo (a silver oxide paste) which has been applied to small lentoid sh…

2007 T405 The British Museum curator's report says: "Silver finger ring. Has a rectangular-shaped bezel with rounded corners. The centre of the bezel is decorated with a cross that has traces of black enamel. The shoulders extend from the top and bottom of the bezel and narrow to form the remainder of the hoop. To the back of the band is a split. There is foliate decoration on the shoulders. To the reverse of the bezel is an oval shape pattern formed of raised pellets; inside this appears to be three raised digits. Evidence from the unseen side of the bezel suggests that this ring dat…

A post-medieval silver broad hoop finger-ring with central raised band within sunken channels, the raised part engraved with geometric decoration and bordered by a dotted line above and below; the inside gilt, the exterior partially gilt. Engraved on the interior is a letter 'T'. There are no precise parallels in the BM, but there is a 15th-century tradition of broad hooped rings with similar central bands within sunken channels and it seems reasonable to see this as a continuation of that tradition. Dalton 881 for example is of similar construction and bears an amuletic inscription…

A copper alloy finger ring which has been compressed into a single flat band. In its current state it is 25.8mm long, 4.3mm wide and 2.6mm thick. The band is decorated with a row of crosses (+) right around the band, and there is an oval bezel which is very worn. The ring has a deep green and brown patina. It probably dates from the post-medieval period but no close published parallel has been found.

A post-medieval gold finger ring which is formed through a series of vertical rectangles, each keyed to recieve enamel which survives in tiny amounts. Inside is an inscription stating "If you regard its' my reward:" However several letters are cut off at the top and bottom of the hoop, suggesting that the ring must have once been a simple straight-edged hoop, and has been cut down at a later date, perhaps to provide gold for other purposes.

A crudely made post-medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is circular and narrows towards the bottom; it is curved in cross-section with the inside of the hoop concave. The square raised bezel has a female portrait facing left, and incuse lettering to either side: the letters appear to be 'RICI' to the left, and 'VI' to the right. Analysis has shown that the ring is composed of 22 carat gold and the ring was reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Although it imitates late Roman rings in its general appearance, it does not do so in any other respect, and there is no evidence from the w…

This is a very heavy ring, with a flat octofoil bezel and square section hoop, angled at the shoulders. The back of the hoop inscribed ROBERT and the side at the back inscribed DUX. It is a puzzling ring as it seems to have borrowed features from earlier periods but the general shape and design has no pre-1706 parallels and the general consensus of opinion is that it is likely to be of relatively recent manufacture.

A cast gold posy ring of probable early 18th century date. The flat gold band is inscribed on the inside 'content hath noe want'. The script could be an 18th century hand. The maker’s mark (TH) written in black letter is most likely identified with one of two smallworkers, the first of which entered his mark in 1711 and the second in 1717 (Grimwade, nos. 2800, 2801). As the find probably dates to later than 1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 (N. Awais-Dean, The British Museum, 16.04.07).

A narrow gold finger ring of probable 17th century date. The ring has a shallow section and is dented and misshapen. The interior of the plain band is inscribed in lower case italic script: + thyncke on me. Two different versions of this inscription are recorded by Joan Evans in 'English Posies and Posy-Rings' (Oxford, 1931), p. 97: Think on mee (from a will of 1618) and + THINKE. ON. ME (BM, Dalton 1302). The style of lettering, the spelling, and the use of a short text on the ring all suggest a date in the 17th century. Dimensions: 19mm (external diameter) by 4mm (width of band). Wei…
