A post medieval white metal finger ring with "posy" inscription. The finger ring does not appear to be definitively silver and may well be a compound but it could still have a high base silver content. The ring is D-shaped in cross-section with a convex outer face. The inner face exhibits the inscription "CHOS NOT TO CHANG" in Roman capitals. There appear to be traces of gilding remaining on the interior. The diameter is 22mm and the weight 3.49g. In general Roman capitals began to be used for inscriptions on posy rings from the mid 16th century and were replaced by Italics by th…

The folowing report is from Martin Henig. "An attractive intaglio in a lower quality, base silver ring. The material of the stone is a non crystalline quartz, a chalcedony, with an upper blue layer and brownish ground, so it could be called a blue onyx or nicolo [ jewellery terms rather than scientific ones], the blue caused by staining/chemical treatment. The gem was cut with an outwardly bevelled edge. The subject is a cow, a popular subject from the Augustan period onwards, though I would date this to the late 1st century/first half of the 2nd century AD. Comparanda: see M.…

A Roman silver finger ring of Guiraud’s type 3, with surviving intaglio. The hoop is D-shaped in cross section, with a flat inner side, tapering from the broad bezel to the narrower rear of the hoop. The result of this is that the rounded D-shape becomes more angular as the hoop broadens and approaches the shoulders and bezel. This effect is emphasised by decorative moulding which has resulted in a narrow ridge running along the centre of the hoop outwards from the shoulders for 12.1mm on each side. The shoulders are decorated with two dished pointed oval shaped expansions. These ar…
