Gold finger ring of Post-Medieval date. The hoop has a thin D-shaped cross-section, and is plain on the exterior. The interior carries an inscription, beginning on the hoop and continuing across the bezel. The inscription is in Lombadic lettering and reads: I PRESENT THE ABSENT The hoop widens slightly as it approaches the shoulders, which carry four raised knops forming a cross. The shoulders end in a raised line, defining a cuff before the bezel depicting two joined hands crowned by two ducks each side of a possible crown. Traces of white enamel survive on the ducks and the hands.

Silver decorated finger ring, probably of Post Medieval date. The ring has a ‘D’ shaped pofile, and has a relatively large diameter. The decoration consists of a series of four pairs of inscribed diagonal lines (c.3mm apart) with internal ‘rain’ pattern. The ring has a break, which may have been deliberate and secondary to fit a larger finger.

Gold ring with plain exterior, inscribed inside in lower case: Noe recompence but love, and stamped with maker's mark 'WG'. Note: Such rings are difficult to date precisely from the shape or inscription alone, but in this instance we can be certain that it pre-dates 1700. Firstly, the spelling of the word 'noe' with an 'e' was common in the 17th century. Secondly, the maker's mark has been identified as that of William Gough I of Marlborough, active about 1620-70: see T A Kent, West Country Silver Spoons and their makers 1560-1750 (London, 1992), pp. 93-94. Mr Kent, an authority on …

Roman copper alloy finger ring of Henig type XII, complete except for its setting and a small piece missing on the bezel (ancient break). The setting is oval (13x10mm) and 2mm deep. The ring is top-heavy and the hoop narrows from a width of 7mm at the shoulders to 2.5mm at the bottom-most point. The hoop is D-shaped in section and the ring is slightly D-shaped in profile, the bezel providing the back. The internal dimensions are 20mm widthways and 16.5mm in height. There are traces of a white residue in the setting. Probably 3rd century.

Copper-alloy Romano-British finger-ring set with red enamel and possibly another colour, only traces of which now remain. The bezel is diamond shaped (being a 8x8mm square set on its points) with a flat underside and divided into two sections. The innermost section is a smaller diamond outined in copper alloy with a copper alloy dot at its centre surrounded with the remains of red enamel. Around this are traces of another ?red enamel with a copper alloy dot at each point but just inside the edge of the diamond shape. The shoulders are 6mm in width and flared, quickly narrowing to the …

Roman copper alloy finger ring, missing its setting. It is similar to Henig Type VIII but badly cast, the area for the setting being lop-sided and missing an edge. The shoulders are triangular in shape and extend at an angle from the bezel. Below the shoulder is another angled section, being almost vertical if the finger ring is viewed sideways on with the bezel to the top. Below this the hoop is curved. The hoop is D-shaped in section and the finger ring has a rather squashed, anglular look about it. Internal measurements are 16x13mm. Much of the original patina is missing. Late Roman.

A complete (apart from some enamelling) Roman copper alloy finger-ring, D-shaped in section and slightly squashed in appearance, with an internal diameter of 16.5mm(widthways)x15.5(heightways)mm. The bezel is circular (c.7mm in diameter) and filled with a ?red enamel : the surface seems smooth but the red enamel only survives in three streaks. Possibly decoration then, with the remaining ?enamel being ?white, or possibly the remaining ?enamel is actually some kind of concretion and the setting was once entirely red. The bezel is flanked on either side by a vertical rib (at 90 degres…

Copper alloy Roman (AD 43-410) finger-ring, the hoop of which is now rather squashed. It does not fit to a Henig type, but is similar to his Type XII in that the widest point is at the bezel and the shoulders taper from this at either side. The hoop is very narrow and thin and D-shaped in section. At its thinnest point (opposite the bezel) it is less than 1mm wide. The bezel is oval and measures 4x5.5mm. It is 1-1.5 mm high and possibly contains traces of enamel, now the same colour green as the metal, or maybe this is a scored pointed oval simply outlining the metal in the bezel, an…

Incomplete copper alloy Roman finger-ring of Henig Type XII, missing its setting. The bezel is pointed oval in shape with a further triangle extending from each point (to form the shoulders) as far as the plain loop, which would have been on the underside of the finger and not visible. The bezel is flanked by a straight-sided flange which gives the finger-ring a rectangular shape. The flange then tapers from the shoulders to the loop. In profile the finger-ring looks top-heavy and slightly squashed horizontally. One bezel-edge appears decorated with tiny incisions - this is actually…

Badly corroded copper alloy medieval finger-ring, 23mm external diameter, 19mm internal. The finger-ring is flat in section and tapers from 8mm wide at the 'bezel' to 5mm at the opposite point on the hoop. The 'bezel' is defined by two vertical incised lines 10mm apart, and the 'shoulders' by an incised triangle pointing away (for 5.5mm) from the bezel, the bases of which are made from the incisions forming the bezel. It is possible there was further decoration, but the surface is extremely pitted. Much of the patina is missing; the metal is rough and almost black in colour.
