Finger ring with a copper-alloy hoop. The hoop is very corroded and has broken into several pieces but the setting (and upper half)of the ring remains intact. The setting appears to be a small circular amber bead (approximately 6mm in diameter) with incised radiating grooves. In the centre of the bead or circular setting is a tiny blue circular setting, possibly glass or enamel. The ring possibly dates to the late Iron Age - early Roman period. The largest remaining portion of the ring measures 22.66mm in length, the width of the ring across the setting is 6.76mm and the width of the …

The object is probably a spiral finger ring of the late Iron Age. A similar example is found at Camerton (Jackson 1990), and the discussion considers whether these rings were also used as toe rings, currency and dress fastenings, but a finger ring seems most likely according to Jackson for the Camerton example. The ring has been made by casting copper alloy. It is circular in plan. The ring is composed of a rounded rectangular sectioned rod which has formed a close fitting spiral of two almost complete loops. The surface of the ring has developed a shiny light blue/green coloured…

The object is possibly a late Iron Age or Roman finger ring. As a finger ring the loop is quite chunky, and is oval in section, due to this the object could be considered as a harness fitting. The ring is made from cast copper alloy. In plan the ring id a sub-D shape. Originally it was probably a ā€˜Dā€™ shape but this damage does not appear to be recent. The loop is oval in section and opposite the bezel is 5.85mm thick. The bezel is flat on the reverse and outer face compared to the loop, but has a off-centre oval voided with rounded edges. The surface of the ring is poor and a…

A late Iron Age to early Roman copper alloy finger-ring (circa late 1st century BC-mid 1st century AD). The finger-ring is made from a single copper alloy rod bent into a loop with over-lapping terminals. The finger-ring has a circular cross-section that tapers and flattens at the terminals. There does not appear to be any decoration. The copper alloy has a pale-mid green patina. A similar finger ring has been found at Camerton (Jackson 1990: 48 pl.14 no.144). The Camerton example has the same circular cross-section but there are more coils and the terminals are missing. Dimens…

A spiral shaped ring possibly a finger ring formed from a length of cast copper alloy of probable later prehistoric or early Roman date. The ring is in the form of a close and thick spiral of just over two complete turns, 4.9mm in width and 3.3mm thick. It weighs 14.7g. The ring has been distorted but formerly had an external diameter of about 24mm. Its cross-section is rectangular with rounded corners. Both terminals are slightly rounded and the surfaces plain and undecorated. The ring has a rich green patina and an uneven, pitted surface. A similar finger ring has been excavated at …

2006 T607 'Witham area', Essex. Plain gold ring consisting of a hoop with circular cross-section, bent into a V shape. No dimensions taken. This object was reported as potential Treasure, but at the time was thought to be a modern ring, less than 300 years old, bent out of shape. It therefore did not qualify as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996. Subsequent to the return of this item in 2007, specialists had cause to examine the photograph again and conceded that there were similarities between this piece and examples of V-shaped finger-rings attributed to the Iron Age (…

A copper alloy ring, in the form of a two turn spiral that has the appearance of a late Bronze Age/Iron age artefact. It may have been a finger ring or perhaps a hair ring. Similar examples, classed as finger rings have been found in context at the Iron Age Hill Fort at Hod Hill. This type of ring is also known in the early Roman period. (See Catherine Johns ā€“ Jewellery of Roman Britain.)

Copper alloy finger ring of uncertain date. The ring is made of wire which is circular in section, 2.7mm in diameter. A short piece of wire has been bent in a circle so the the two ends overlap; both ends have been hammered flat. One end has been hammered into a flat strip, 8.2mm long, 4.7mm wide by 1.4mm thick, the other has just been brought to a wedge shaped end. This type of very simple ring is hard to date, examples are known from the Iron Age onwards. The size and simplicity of this example suggests it may have been made for a child.

Gold ornamental ring from Kineton, Warwickshire. This ring, formed of a plain round-section wire, was at the time of discovery felt to be completely undiagnostic, with no evidence to date it more than 300 years old, and because of this it was felt to lie outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Subsequently, specialists have had cause to examine the photograph again. The slight bend at both sides of the ring, giving it a slightly angled appearance in side view, gives similarities between this piece and examples of V-shaped finger-rings attributed to the Iron Age (e.g. 2016T537…

A copper alloy ring, probably a finger ring, of probable late Iron Age or Roman date (50BC - 300 AD). The ring is cast in one piece and is relatively large and heavy. It has been much abraded in the plough soil and lost a considerable amount of its surface. The ring is relatively uniform in diameter and broadly D shaped in cross section. It is decorated with a single circumferential recessed band which divides the ring unevenly. There seems to be no other surface decoration present. The ring has a maximum outer diameter of 28.3mm and a maximum internal diameter of 19.8mm. The ring is …

2009 T97. Description: A gold, circular-sectioned wire ring, now bent out of shape. When placed on a surface it is slightly undulating but essentially flat. Discussion: This object could represent the misshapen remains of a bent, V-shaped finger ring of a type which is rare but known from the Iron Age. The closest parallel would be a ring from Park Brow, Sompting, West Sussex, dating from 400-200 BC. However, because of the distorted nature of the object it is impossible to be certain of this identification. Compare two certain examples of V-shaped middle Iron Age finger-rings a…

A copper alloy finger ring, probably of late Iron Age or early Roman date. It consists of a strip of metal which is D shaped in section, wound round to create a spiral of three turns. These are no longer tightly coiled, but have separated and been pulled sideways. The smooth mid green patina has been worn away (probably post-recovery) to reveal bare brass beneath. On the flat side of the strip at one end is a small circular depression. A corresponding depression can be found on the convex side of the other end of the strip.
