A complete, tightly rolled, Roman lead curse tablet, dating to c AD 43 - 410. It is made up of a rolled strip of lead, each layer between c 2.0- 3.0mm and there are approximately eight layers, tightly wound into a sub rectangular shape. There are very straight outer cut edges, where the layers show, perhaps cut after rolling. The layers are held by nails, three copper heads, hammered flush, showing along the cut outer end of the lead strip, itself roughly torn, and one head on each of the two adjacent sides, two more on the opposite side. An incomplete Roman lead curse tablet, dating to c AD 43 - 410. The find is a sub rectangular sheet of lead, folded once. However, the ends do not meet as they may once have done, because only two sides are cut, the other two apparently with early damage and torn, including the top edge and the outer part of one folded edge. Inscribed capital letters can be seen on the inside section, where the tear has exposed that surface, but also on the outside. Transverse lines have been incised to guide the letters. Once the tablet was gently unfolded, the letters on…

A complete, but worn and corroded rolled strip of lead-alloy of uncertain date, probably a 'Roman curse tablet' (AD 70-410). The object is made from a single probably rectangular piece of metal, but the edges and visible end have suffered considerably from corrosion rendering it impossible to determine the extent of the original item. This was found close to the site a roman temple where curse tables were recovered during archaeological excavation. Any inscription would be on the inside, but because the object cannot be unrolled without damaging it, we cannot be certain if th…

A complete, but worn rolled strip of lead-alloy of uncertain date, probably a 'Roman curse tablet' (AD 70-410), but also possibly a more modern weight or ingot. The object is made from a single probably rectangular piece of metal of varying thickness. Two opposite sides of the sheet were folded inward before being roled up. This has made it impossible to see any traces of writing on the inside, which would have been present on a curse tablet. The metal is white in colour and powdery, with a darker brown patina surviving in the grooves. As the object cannot b…

Lead possible curse tablet. A small tightly rolled rectangular offcut of cast lead sheet of thickness 1.6mm, with a neatly flattened end; patinated. The small size distinguishes this from rolled sheet net sinkers, while the crisp finish tends to distinguish this from offcuts formed by trimming other objects and subsequently gathered for recycling - though, of course, any profession might include obsessively tidy folk among its practitioners, including the workers of lead. In view of the potential interest of the piece, the finder is to be commended for not attempting to unroll the obj…

Description: An incomplete lead-alloy curse tablet dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43-410. The full report on this object was undertaken by Dr Roger Tomlin, which can be seen below. When discovered, the tablet was folded up- being partially unfolded by the finder. The illustration provided within this record is by Dr Tomlin, the letterforms suggested above the photo represent a preliminary interpretation of the text. A folded lead alloy tablet of unknown date, possibly a 'Roman curse tablet' (AD 70-410). Although this object has been classified as a curse tablet, it is possibly more modern and may have performed an entirely different function, perhaps such as a weight or ingot. The object is formed of a thin lead strip that has been folded over and over. The end of the strip is raised slightly from the rest of the metal. The object is undecorated, and flat. As the object cannot be unrolled without damaging it, we cannot be sure if there is an inscription within. The surface is grey with patches of…

Sheet lead rolled strip of unknown date, possibly a 'Roman curse tablet' (AD 43-410), as Roman coins were found in the same field. Although this object has been classified as a curse tablet, it is possibly more modern and may have performed an entirely different function, such as a weight or ingot. The strip has a spiral profile suggesting it was rolled rather than folded, which is more typical of such tablets. Linear ridges may have been created when it was being rolled or they may have taken on an impression of what is within or what the rolled strip was inserted into. As the object…

A probable Roman lead alloy curse tablet (defixio). The object is formed of a sheet of lead alloy which has been folded over multiple times. There is a square hole through it, slightly off centre, through which an iron nail would have passed. The lead is a light grey in colour. No text is visible on the object, though it would have likely been on the internal surface only. Folded lead with square perforations such as this are often believed to be curse tablets, though it is not certain unless text is clearly visible. They were used throughout the Roman period and are thus difficul…

Lead curse tablet. Object formed by neatly rolling cast lead sheet of thickness c.1mm with its visible end of oval form into a tube; the sheet is rolled about twice, presumably around a former. Patinated overall. The object retains reddish soil in the centre and has not been unwrapped by the finder - nor by this reporter. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Lead possible curse tablet. A rectangle of cast sheet of thickness 1.3mm tightly folded and then rolled into a tapering cylinder. The object is so tightly rolled and compressed as to forbid a use as a weight for a line running through its middle, though a cut on one side might have provided a tying groove. Patinated overall. The light gauge of the sheet and its neat compression differentiate this object from net weights of comparable form. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Lead possible curse tablet. A rectangle cut from cast lead sheet of thickness 1.7mm, neatly and tightly rolled thrice, leaving a central aperture. The distinction between a curse tablet and a fishing net sinker of Early Medieval form resides in the careful cutting and rolling of the former, which contrasts with the casual rolling or clenching of a weight of similar construction. Both classes of objects may come from watery or riparian contexts, though for different reasons - Prehistoric and Romano-British cults had a particular respect for watery locations. Suggested date: Roman, 43-4…

Lead curse tablet. A long rectangle of cast lead sheet of thickness 2mm, probably knife trimmed, and then neatly rolled into a tight tube. Very lightly patinated. The finder reports an attempt to unroll and read the sheet was embarked on and abandoned without result, though this operation has left the outer end of the strip frayed. The object is altogether more tidily and tightly coiled than the rolled sheet lead fishing weights whose construction it otherwise resembles, and the sheet is thinner than that apt to structural use. Lead possible Curse Tablet. Rectangular plate cut from cast sheet of thickness 2.5mm, neatly rolled into a loose tube. Patinated overall, and with soil trapped within. As a curse tablet, the lead object, like a miniature axehead and numerous later Roman coins, may hint at the proximity of a temple or shrine. Suggested date of the curse tablet: Roman, 40-400. The finder reports the object was recovered threaded through a ring, and this configuration is illustrated. The lead is lightly grooved by the ring, though also here patinated as heavily as elsewhere. However, the ring, of copp…

A possible Roman lead curse tablet (AD 43-AD 410). This piece of lead is sub oval in shape and has been folded over at one end. It has an oval indentation on one side of the object which may have been caused by a tool whilst folding rather than being decoration. Although this object has been classified as a curse tablet, it is possibly more modern and may either have acted as a weight or be a piece of casting waste.
