Copper alloy cosmetic set fragment. A cast D-section ring of diameter 23.1mm retains an implement which has been folded with a loop to attach it to the ring, the loop being decorated by a single central longitudinal groove on one side – apparently the reverse. The implement has a keeled rhomboid lightly concavo-convex blade with a pointed tip springing from one side of the loop, with a thinner and also lightly concavo-convex strip or tab as an apparent counterpart behind the better-preserved part. A further thin leaf of copper alloy may be clasped between these elements. What rem…

Distorted medieval sheet copper alloy cosmetic set in a very peculiar arrangement and without a pair of tweezers. A flat earscoop, similar to Egan and Pritchard 1991 no. 1756, has been reused or converted as the base on the two ends of which two other implements swivel and are held by a rivet. The end of another rivet is fixed at the mid point of the base but is without any apparent function. An identical earscoop is attached to the proximal end and the two are separated by a triangular washer. This functioning earscoop has the same arrangement of thr…

Copper alloy cosmetic implement. Cast object with an oval suspension loop with drilled aperture, enlarged by wear, a moulded bulbous handle of D-section, of thicker upper and thinner lower profile and hollowed behind, and a flat straight-sided projecting blade, now bent and broken. A fragment of Later Post-Medieval (1700-1800) two-armed silver cosmetic set consisting of arms that are surmounted by a loop. Both arms have a semi-circular cross-section that when held together form an evenly and equally decorated a circular rod consisting of a double rectangular collar with stepped interior below the loop, then emanating from the base of the collar on each side is an oval leaf with hatched detailing. The remaining part of the shaft has a circular cross-section with an expanded double grooved collar at the base. These would have formed the handles for the cosmetic it…

An incomplete copper alloy cometic/toilet set of Roman (or possibly early medieval) date. The item consists of a wire suspension loop with a simple nail cleaner and ear scoop attached to it. The suspension loop is made from circular cross-sectioned wire, each end of which is wrapped around itself twice in a slip knot. The suspension loop of both cosmetic implements has been formed in a similar way from folding a long section of circular cross-sectioned wire in two and wrapping the free end around the centre of the implement several times, creating the loop within the outer fold.
