A cast copper-alloy cosmetic article of probable Medieval date, c. 1200-1500. The implement has a small spoon/scoop terminal on a circular-sectioned shaft, with a flaring socketed terminal at the opposite end. In its present condition, the socket is triangular in plan, but it may have been flattened and originally conical in shape. In function, it may have attached to a further wooden shaft, or perhaps held a cosmetic brush. A similar find has been found from Sherburn parish, North Yorkshire (YORYM-1AC294).

A Roman (AD 43-410) copper alloy cosmetic article with a flat spoon at one end and a loop at the other, measuring 93.89mm in length and weighing 7.3g. The implement is formed from a single piece of thick wire (c.3.5mm in diameter), twisted. One end is bent round to form a circle (the loop) the other is flattened to form a double-sided flat spoon, 4.61mm wide. The loop measures 9.33mm in diameter and has a central gap 2.67mm in diameter. Crummy comments (1981, p.59) that spoons had a variety of purposes. A flat spoon such as this one may have been the equivalent of the modern 'ho…

A Roman copper alloy nail cleaner probably of Crummy type 2a dating from the mid 1st to early 2nd century AD. The cleaner is almost complete with a circular suspension loop at the top, below which is an oval neck. The body of the object is leaf shaped and tapers gently towards the double pronged terminal. Two narrow linear grooves decorate one surface beginning below the loop and terminating between the prongs. On the other surface the decoration is similar starting at the loop and ending at the terminal. On this side there are two linear ridges on either side of which there is a gro…

Roman copper alloy object possibly ligula dating between the 1st-4th century AD. The object is bent over to a point before tapering, flattening and terminating in a small, inverted triangular scoop. Possibly used by a surgeon or for mixing paint or cosmetics. The object could as an alternative be a later Medieval brooch pin. The length is 55mm, the width is 4mm and the weight is 1.74g.

A cast copper alloy object, which appears to be a toilet implement – namely an ear scoop. The object has a conical terminal, decorated with two sets of parallel incised rings. This cone would presumably once have held a wooden shaft. Extending out from the apex of the cone is a circular section strip, which terminated with the shallow, but wide ear scoop-like fitting. The metal is a mid brownish-green colour. This object appears to be medieval, but an earlier date can not be ruled out.

Probably a cast cu-alloy nail cleaner/small fork of a cosmetic set dating from the early Roman period, i.e. AD43-150. The shaft is flat-rectangular in cross-section and while one end terminates in a suspension loop, the other one terminates in two small prongs which are now broken/damaged. If this is a set of nail cleaners, it is probably a Crummy Type 1a or 1b with a simple thickish shaft and a suspension loop rising directly from the shaft, being on the same plane. Crummy dates these types to the late 1st and very early 2nd century.

A cast copper-alloy Roman object, which could either be a cosmetic article or it could be a bracelet/armlet. The object has a circular section, which flattens off at one terminal. The object is bent roughly in half. Both terminals are damaged. The terminal with the circular section has a slighthly flattened tip and it has been pierced. The opposite terminal (with the flattened section) has been decorated with incised rings and linear markings. The terminal has broken off and the break is very damaged. The metal surface has a mid brownish-green patina and it is pitted.

A copper-alloy Roman probable double ended suspension loop probably associated with a cosmetic or toilet set. Consisting of one piece of copper-alloy wire both ends are folded over to form loops, one of which is larger than the other and has a break in it, this larger loop also has a flattened section. The smaller loop has traces of iron staining adhering to it. The terminals of the wire are wrapped around its shaft. This object could have possibly worked by being suspended from a belt with a cosmetic set suspended from its other end. The object measures 55.78mm in length and 13.0…

A copper-alloy Roman probable suspension loop probably associated with a cosmetic or toilet set. The loop is formed from one piece of copper-alloy wire, bent in its center, forming a loop with both terminals bent upwardss and over at their tips, which taper to a point. Cast copper alloy handle, probably Roman. The main body of the handle is formed from a circular sectioned shaft that swells noticeably at the centre. The shaft is decorated with a pair of double incised lines, set 9.06mm apart, essentially bordering the ‘swelling’. At one end of the shaft is a decorative bifoliate terminal which takes the form of two divergent curls, which curl down towards the shaft. Each curl is decorated with a small, circular depression at the end of the curl and is mirrored on the reverse side. There may once have been some incised decoration. At the opposite…

A copper-alloy fragment of a probable Roman toilet spoon. The spoon consists of a shallow bowl, at the end of a broken and bent shaft. The bowl measures 11.3 mm long and 9.5 mm wide. Similar spoons have variously been seen as ear picks or scoops and spoons with which to extract cosmetics from flasks, boxes and small pots (Crummy 1983, 59). Given the relatively large size of the bowl of the spoon on this example it seems probable that it was used for the latter purpose. It is possible that this article formed part of a more general cosmetic set, and that it was hung, together with oth…

Probably Roman, copper alloy possibly cosmetic instrument, incomplete. The object is 58.5mm in length with one flattened 'spatula' end 5.5mm wide and 1.5mm thick (hammer marks are visible on one side), the other end being twisted and rectangular in section (3.5mm wide and 2.5mm thick). The twisting starts where the flattening stops, c. a third of the way from the spatula end, but this consists of a single twist only and the next third is plain rectangular section (3.5x2.5mm). The final third has two and a half twists, before the break. Weighs 4.33g. The spatula end suggests use i…
