Object type: COIN
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Yorkshire

A probably modern imitation lead alloy coin in the form of an Early Medieval silver coin. The piece appears to be inspired by a coin of Eadgar (959 - 975), Pre-reform two line type (959 - 973). It is very similar to North number 741, but the moneyer's name is 'NORB/ER' which is not one of the listed possibilities. The finder has had the piece tested using XRF and it is made of a high lead alloy. The crosses in the design seem thinner and cruder than the illustrated genuine coins. The piece is 22.63mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 3.9g.

A lead alloy imitation of a Scottish copper alloy coin; a sixpence or Bawbee of Charles II (1649 - 1685), dated 1679. The coin is made of lead alloy and is unusually thick, but is otherwise a good copy of Spink Volume II number 5628. The coin has been pierced with a circular hole through the centre. Part of the edge of the coin is missing.

A cast lead alloy, uniface copy of a Roman coin, probably dating from AD43-260 and perhaps intended to mimic an As or Dupondius. The upper side carries a bust of an unidentified emperor. A small section of the flan is missing from behind the emperor's head. It is 24.1mm in diameter and 3.9mm thick. It weighs 10.46gm. Lead alloy copies of Roman coins are known from votive sites such as the River Tees at Piercebridge. It is possible that this copy has a religious function. Compare SWYOR-3AF804.
