A coin of Louis XIV of France.
Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows.
Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old.
This is therefore a réformation:
A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'.

CORONER'S REPORT
One of three silver sceatta, protentially from the 8th Century. Found in association with DOR-B8A4A2 (Coin 1) & DOR-B8C682 (Coin 3).
Description of find
The objects were all found in the same field. Two of the coins (the Treasure receipt does not specify which) were found eighteen inches apart. The third coin was found twenty-two paces away, and the pin seven paces back from the third coin. All were found in a straight line, consistent with a single find spread out by ploughing.
