A rare, copper-alloy dupondius of Severus Alexander (AD 222-235), minted in Rome, AD 229. RESTITVTOR MON reverse type depicting the emperor standing left with spear. Ref. RIC, Vol. IV, Part II, p.118, no. 601. Severus Alexander apparently struck this coinage in connection with an 'enigmatic ... '"reform" in c. 229 celebrated with dupondii inscribed Restitvtor Mon (Alexander standing) and Mon Restitvta (Moneta standing). A very worn copper-alloy Dupondius, probably of Severus Alexander (AD 222-235). Reverse shows Pax advancing left. This coin is probably a contemporary copy, a limesfalsum, although it is very worn. It appears to be from the same mould as another coin found in Hertfordshire (BH-386FB5) which is a also a copper-alloy dupondius. 'Mint of Rome', AD 228. The reverse does appear to be of Severus Alexander and is probably taken from an as - RIC IV, p. 109, cf. 480. No dupondius is recorded for this issue so an obverse of another coin, a dupondius, was probably used for the obverse mould. The…

Obverse legend reads: IMP CAES M AVR SEV ALEXANDER AVG. Reverse shows Securitas standing left by altar holding sceptre. Reverse reads SECVRITAS PERPETVA. Diameter is 22.06mm, weight is 4.8g and the die axis is 12 o'clock. References: cf. BMC VI, no. 149 and cf. RIC IV, pt. 2, p. 118, no.612. This is a find of note.
