A Medieval silver coin; a continental sterling imitation (a crockard) of John II of Avesnes, count of Hainaut (1280-1304) and count of Holland (1299-1304), dating from AD1290 - 1300. The mint is Mons (now in present-day Belgium). For reference, see Mayhew number 34 (or 159-160) as cited in Withers (forthcoming). The coin has suffered some damage since deposition in the soil and is now bent. It is 19.2mm in diameter and 0.8mm thick. It weighs 1.37gm.

A complete, albeit folded, medieval silver hammered continental imitation of a sterling penny (a crockard). Minted for John II of Avesnes, count of Hainaut (AD 1247-1304), issued in c.1280-1304. Possibly Mayhew (1983) Type 33. Obverse: Not viewable because of the folding. Obverse inscription: Not readable. Reverse: Long cross pattee quartering reverse and inscription, with three pellets in each quarter. Reverse inscription: MON / ETA / MON / TES. It measures 17.17mm in length, 8.29mm in width, 1.95mm in thickness, and weighs 1.09g.
