Medieval silver coin, known as a 'Crockard'. Medieval English pennies were widely imitated on the continent and were known as crockards and pollards. A 'Crockard' is a penny with the bust crowned with flowers; a 'Pollard' is a coin without a crown or flowers. This coin is a silver hammered crockard of Gui of Collemede (1296 - 1306), who was the bishop of Cambrai, in France. On the obverse of the coin is the forward facing bust of Gui crowned by a chaplet of flowers. The lettering around the circumference of the coin reads: 'GVIUDO EPISCOPVS'. A complete continental sterling imitation of a Medieval long cross penny, issued by William of Hainaut, Bishop of Cambrai (1285-1296 AD). Mint: Cambrai; double-pellet stops. This sterling coin is from the latter half of his episcopate, dating to c. 1290-96. The obverse depicts a bust facing front with rose wreath instead of crown; the obverse legend reads: + GVILLS:EPISCOPVS. The reverse depicts a long cross pattee with three pellets in each quadrant; the reverse legend reads: CAMERACENSIS. Cf. Mayhew 1983, No. 88.
