A copper-alloy core of a plated silver Iron Age unit. The coin is of Western, Dobunnic type, and may be a contemporary forgery of a regular Iron Age coin. The obverse depicts a degenerated stylised head facing right, whilst the reverse depicts a horse facing right. See British Museum Catalogue numbers 3003-3011 for similar (Hobbs 1996, Plate 96). Hobbs notes that this particular type may be later than the main silver Dobunnic group, based upon the style of the right facing horse, which he suggests may exhibit a Roman influence. A contemporary forgery of an Iron Age coin. The imagery on this coin is consistent with an 'Uninscribed Western Silver - 'Regular' type' silver unit (BMC 2950-2962); however, the copper-alloy core retains traces of what appears to be a gold plating. Van Arsdell (1989: 271, no. 1020-1) suggests a date of c. 35BC-30BC for the regular, silver version of this coin. The dished flan measures 12.9mm in diameter and 0.4mm thick. The weight is 0.41g.
