A very worn copper-alloy coin of uncertain type, possibly a Byzantine coin of uncertain Emperor, c.5th-10th centuries AD? The coin has a flattened oval shaped flan that has been folded at one end, with one face illegible due to post-depositional damage and wear. This is possibly a core from a plated gold(?) Byzantine coin rather than a copper-alloy coin.

A copper-alloy Byzantine pentanummium/five nummi piece of emperor Justinian I (527-565). The obverse is now blank but would originally have had a bust of an Emperor to the right and an inscription. On the reverse is the Greek letter epsilon or number 5, referring to the denomination of 5 nummi. There is a cross in the right of the field. It was struck between 542-565 in Constantinople. Copper-alloy nummus of Constans II (AD 641-668), Standing emperor and large M, Constantinople, possibly AD 655/6. cf. Dumbarton Oaks Catalogue Vol II, Part 2, p. 452, 75-76. The coin is overstruck or double-struck and this identification is tentative. This is a very unusual coin to find in Suffolk, unless it is a modern loss (e.g. from a coin collector). Particularly unusual is the fact that it is not pierced or mounted in any way.
