Lead Coin. Modern Forgery of a Porcupine Sceatta, Series E. Obverse description: Quilled crescent right. Reverse description: Central cross of four pellets; lines and pellets either edge. Diameter: 16.1mm, Weight: 2.40gms. Similar objects have been recovered, particularly from favoured detecting sites since about 2000, apparently as a reprisal for indeterminate misdeeds by one group of detectorists against another. A group of lead sceattas interpreted as a dispersed hoard was reported in the TAR for 2008 (no. 572); local detectorists believe these were reported as Treasure…

A modern copy of a North-Eastern 'Ferriby' stater. This example is made out of lead. The obverse depicts a wreath made of two lines of diagonal lines. Next to this are two pellets. A deep groove runs across the coin adjacent to the lines. The reverse depicts a rather clumsy attempt at a horse left. This revese of this coin is almost identical to that on an apparently unfinished copy found several miles to the north-west in Stainton by Langworth: LIN-B89EFD. Further lead alloy objects bearing Iron Age coin motifs are also known in the region:LIN-B8D9B9, LIN-B8C44E, LIN-B89EFD, NLM-7…

Lead coin. A modern replica, as kindly identified by the finder. This example is probably intended to resemble an Anglo-Saxon sceat, and appears from its edge to be constructed from the union of two separate thin flans. Their unpatinated surfaces may suggest this to be a recent addition to a corpus of fake base metal coins purporting to be of Anglo-Saxon or Iron Age date. Their distribution is centred in north-eastern Lincolnshire, with a postulated 'mint' in the Grimsby area. They are thought to have been broadcast in jest or malice on known detecting fields. One side of this example…

A lead disc, 26mm in diameter and 6mm thick, weighing 39g. Each face has an image of a Henry II or III voided shortcross penny. Obverse: HENRICVS REX with sceptre Reverse: Voided short cross legend reads cf.: [ ] GNVNAL ON SNOT[ ] The coin has been made using a die ie., it is not a retrograde impression from a real Henry penny. The patina of the lead is a dark grey. This is highly likley to be a modern museum replica or trial piece manufactured by the known commercial replica manufacturer Grunal Moneta (website active on date of this record - http://livinghistory.co.uk/hom…

A probable lead alloy forgery based on an inscribed silver unit of the Corieltauvi, possibly imitating ABC 1896 'Vepo ring silver half unit', though the poor definition of the horse in particular is more akin to the discombobulated state of the beast appearing on gold staters; the size, thickness and weight also have more in common with the gold Iron Age coins than the silver. The inscribed silver coinage would bear a date of Haselgrove period 3 phase 8, AD 10-40, but its forgery might rather relate to the period 1990-2010. Obverse description: wreath with extra leaves in a square …

A lead object bearing a design seen on late Iron Age North Eastern staters. The object is circular, dished, and bears the obverse and reverse motifs found on late Iron Age staters. These motifs are rather clumsily done, however. The obverse (convex side) depicts a wreath formed of ten diagonal lines, five on each side. Next to this are two pellets, aligned parallel to the wreath. Adjacent to the wreath and pellets is a moulded line, and possibly two smaller pellets to the side. The reverse (concave side) depicts an abstract horse running to the left. Above the horse is a ring of six p…

A modern reproduction imitating an early-medieval sceatta made of an alloy, probably tin / lead / aluminium based. No photograph. Several of these 'coins' were found across the rally site having been deliberately scattered by the individual who had them made in France (and who's name is on the coins).

Lead alloy coin. A probably cast flan, perhaps intended to imitate a silver or gold Celtic coin. Numerous modern forgeries of Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon coins distributed in areas of heavy detectorist activity are thought to come from a ‘mint’ in the Grimsby area, and may reflect rivalry between detectorists. Suggested date: Modern, 1980-2000 Diameter: 16.3mm, Thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 4.04gms

Lead possible coin forgery. A droplet of lead which has set on a flat surface and then been stamped with an oval panel on its upper side; the metal retains a grey tint. This may be a further example of ‘coins’ made to resemble Celtic and Anglo-Saxon issues distributed across land frequented by metal detectorists; a ‘mint’ in the Grimsby area is suspected. Suggested date: Modern, 1990-2010 Diameter: 19.8mm, Thickness: 4mm, Weight: 7.31gms
