A worn copper-alloy Roman sestertius of Trajan (AD 98-117), dating to the period AD 104-111 (Reece period 5). SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI reverse type depicting Trajan in military dress with cloak floating behind him, on horse prancing right brandishing javelin in right hand at Dacian who has fallen under the horse. Mint of Rome. As BMC p. 177 no. 839 for the reverse type; cf. RIC II p. 282 no. 543. Andrew Brown kindly added these details, which also accord with the kind advice offered towards the improvement of the original record by Alice Bliss. Diameter: 32mm, Weight: 19.14gms
