A fragment of a Roman gold coin, probably a contemporary copy of a solidus of the House of Valentinian (AD 364-78) with garbled legends. The obverse appears to be OH VALE[ ] which is probably copying D N VALE[NS or NTINIANVS P F AVG] and the reverse is [ ]ITVOR[ ] which most likely copies RESTIVTOR REI PVBLICAE or similar, with and emperor standing, holding Victory on globe and standard. An incomplete copper alloy Roman nummus, probably of Theodosius II, dating to the period AD 425-435 (Reece Period 22). The reverse type depicts a cross in a wreath. RIC X, p. 275, cf. 440ff. This is only the second coin of its type recorded from Britain - see SUR-13EB9C. These coins are very common in the Eastern Mediterranean, where they were struck, but are very rare in the North-Western Roman Empire.

An early 5th-century gold solidus of Honorius (393-423 AD), 'VICTORIA AVGGG', struck at Ravenna, 402-406 AD (R.I.C. 1287d) found in relation with find ID HAMP-F71BD4.
The coins
The coins, both gold solidi, were issued by the Roman emperor Honorius (AD 393-423). One was made at the mint in his then capital Ravenna between AD 402-6, while the other was made at nearby Milan in the period AD 395-402. Gold solidus of Jovinus (411-13), RESTITVTOR REIP reverse type depiciting emperor draped, cuirassed, standing right, holding standard in right hand and Victory on globe in left hand; treading down a prostrate captive with left foot Mint of Triet Trier, RIC X, Trier no. 1704.
Jovinus was a usurper (unofficial emperor) who reigned in Gaul from AD 411-413. The coin is in very good condition, with little or no wear, although there is a small split at the edge behind the Emperor's head.
