A copper-alloy Roman nummus of Honorius (395-423 AD). GLORIA ROMANORVM reverse type showing two emperors each with a spear and shield. Mint of Cyzicus (mintmark: SMKA), minted c. AD 408-423 AD. Reece Period 22. Coin Reference: RIC X, p. 271, no. 403. This coin type is very common in the Mediterranean, but this is the first example recorded in Britain.

An unclipped contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Honorius, AD393-423. This coin is copying a coin minted at Aquileia, Reece period 21. Reverse legend reads VRBS ROMA. Reverse shows Roma seated right, holding spear and Victory on globe. Obverse shows pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Obverse legend read DN HONORIVS PF AVG. Reverse fields and exergue read: -/-//AQLP dot. Condition is very fine, die axis is 12 o'clock, weight is 1.32g, diameter is 16.85mm. Find of Note: this unusual contemporary copy is not present in the Hoxne Hoard.

CORONER'S REPORT An early 5th-century gold solidus of Honorius (393-423 AD), 'VICTORIA AVGGG', struck at Ravenna, 402-406 AD (R.I.C. 1287d) found in relation with find ID HAMP-F71BD4. The coins The coins, both gold solidi, were issued by the Roman emperor Honorius (AD 393-423). One was made at the mint in his then capital Ravenna between AD 402-6, while the other was made at nearby Milan in the period AD 395-402.
