A fragment of a Roman gold coin, probably a contemporary copy of a solidus of the House of Valentinian (AD 364-78) with garbled legends. The obverse appears to be OH VALE[ ] which is probably copying D N VALE[NS or NTINIANVS P F AVG] and the reverse is [ ]ITVOR[ ] which most likely copies RESTIVTOR REI PVBLICAE or similar, with and emperor standing, holding Victory on globe and standard. The reverse depicts a beaded upright, which seems to be part of the pole of the standard. A heavily worn Roman to Early Medieval copper-alloy coin, possibly a nummus of 5th to 6th century AD date, c.AD 425-530 (Reece Periods 22-23). The coin has some damage to the flan and evidence for corrosion, the surviving elements of the design now indistinct and lacking detail.
