Groat of Edward IV, Light Coinage 1464-1470, either North 1570-71 Class VII-VIII Initial Mark Crown / Sun, or North 1575 Class IX, Initial Mark Crown / Rose. There are a number of issues with this coin, in that the metal it is made from is not standard silver, instead it seems to be an amalgam or white metal alloy. This would indicate either it being a contemporary copy (which would explain the clipping around the edge) or a modern forgery or copy, probably produced on a relatively small scale for sale in museums and for modern collectors). The surface is heavily worn and pitted and…

This is a very unusual coin that appears to be a forgery of a silver William and Mary possibly tin farthing. It is the right size for a tin farthing according to Spinks 345 but the portarait and reverse are all wrong. The double bust is facing left when it is always right and the reverse portrays a shield which is only portrayed on Guineas or half-gineas and sometimes the half-crown. Making this coin would not have been simple as it is well made and seems an awful lot of work to make an obvious forgery. All denominations appear to be double bust facing right. I wonder if it is a forie…

A silver Roman coin; a Denarius, possibly a modern replica of Antoninus Pius, 138-161AD. It has a diameter of 18.23mm, thickness 2.11mm, weight 2.15g. The surface of the coin is pitted and the obverse legend looks suspicious. The metal does not feel like silver - it is possibly a white metal coating over a base metal core. The coin is copying a denarius of Antoninus Pius with naked Genius or Bonus Eventus on the reverse, number 4069 in Sear Volume II. The coin is scratched and chipped.

This coin purports to be a Roman radiate (Antoninianus) of Gallienus (AD253-268) probably made from billon. The obverse shows the radiate draped cuirassed bust right. The reverse is indistinct but is most likely to be of Concordia standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae. In any event, the coin is in very poor condition with an eroded and split rim. The surface has degraded with various corrosive elements and the coin is underweight for its type. The quality of the die is also poor, in all; it is most probably a contemporary copy. A probable modern fake of a penny of Edward the Confessor, Winchester mint. The coin appears to be imitating a hammer cross type (AD 1059-1062) although there is no annulet in the quarters of the cross as is usual for this series. The obverse inscription reads 'EADHARRD REX', crowned bust with sceptre right. The reverse reads 'ELFPINNE ON PINC'. The coin is of a very tinny white metal, and is of the correct weight and diameter however there is little wear and no tarnishing and the metal does not look or feel right for silver of this period.

A modern white metal copy of a post-medieval halfgroat of Henry VIII (1509-1547), copying either the third or post-humous coinage. There are several reasons to consider this a modern rather than contemporary forgery, probably dating from the Victorian period onwards. The flan of the coin is too round for a hammered coin of this period, and the edges of the coin a flat with sharp corners. The initial mark (cross with pellet centre) is not one known for Henry VIII and the inscriptions on both obverse and reverse contain inaccuracies- the end of obverse inscription reads [ ]RSh; the r…

White Metal possible coin. Material is either silver or lead. The only discernible feature is a set of four parallel lines of uneven length on one side of the coin. These might hint at a legionary denarius. Cliff Reeves kindly examined this heavily cleaned object, opining that it may either be an early [Republican] Denarius, or possibly a forgery. The latter class might include recently manufactured 'coins'. Suggested date: Either Early Roman, circa 50 BC to AD 200, or possibly Modern, 2000-2010. Diameter: 15.8mm, Weight: 1.87gms
