An incomplete Post-Medieval base silver penny of Philip and Mary (1554-1558) dating to 1554 to 1558. Minted at London. Rf: North (1991, 129) no.1976. The coin is badly abraded and has a almost a third missing to the right of the shield on the reverse.

Post Medieval base silver penny of Philip and Mary dating to AD 1554-1558, initial mark unclear, minted at London. North (1991:129), no.1976. The coin is referred to as 'base' or 'billon' as it has only about 1/3rd silver. This debasement allowed a much larger and more 'usable' coin to be struck.

The coin is also pierced with a circular hole near the edge at 11 o'clock ont he obverse, 2 o'clock on the reverse.
