Any detail on the coin has been worn off or deliberately removed, meaning it is hard to identify with any degree of certainty. It is likely, based on its size, to be either a groat from the reign of Elizabeth I or Charles I, or a Sixpence from the reign of Charles II. A copper alloy provincial coin of Severus Alexander dating to the period AD 222 to 235. Three standards reverse. Mint of Nicaea, Bithynia. BMC Vol. 13, p. 168, no. 100-103. It is possible that this coin is a modern loss rather than an ancient one. These coins are rarely found by metal detectorists and it is not believed they were not in wide circulation in the Romano-British period.

In, "Coins of Europe", Carson, R. A. (1962, p.315) states that this type was introduced in 1497 under Ferdinand V and Isabella I (1474-1504-1516) but continued to be minted until 1537, within the reign of Charles V. Mass: 0.9g. A broken silver sterling imitation of an Edwardian type penny of Henry II, Archbishop of Cologne, 1306-32, Bonn Mint. In "Sterling Immitations of Edwardian Type", Mayhew states that the most distinctive feature of the coins issued by Henry II, Archbishop of Cologne is the "Irish" triangle around the bust on the obverse. (p.81). The coin described here does not have the Irish triangle - the mitred bust is set within a beaded circle. The reverse is a short cross fleuronee.

A copper alloy shilling of James II, (Irish) gun money coinage, small size variant, June 1690. Coin reference: Seaby, 1984, 6582G. As discussed in record references KENT-F12E34 and HAMP-483F40, during 1689 and 1690, James II operated a military campaign in Ireland from where he planned to mount an invasion of England, having been deposed by Mary and William of Orange. During this time, copper alloy emergency coinage was issued by James II to pay the troops. The use of secondary metal for the coinage (e.g. from cannons, etc) gave rise to the name "gun money".
