The coin has been halved and only the central part of the flan survives, the outer circle having broken away around the line of the inner circle removing all of the inscriptions, leaving just a small single cross pattee on the reverse, and part of the bust drapery on the obverse. The coin is 12.5mm diameter, 1.1mm thick and 0.76g.

The coin is mostly illegible, with the central motifs and one inscription no longer legible. The extant partial legend probably reads [---] ED R[...], very tentatively suggesting, if this is on the obverse, a regal issue of either Aethelred (EDILRED) II, AD 840-848, or of Eanred (AD 810-840). A fragment of an Early Medieval coin: a silver penny. Less than quarter of the coin survives, so identification is not at all certain, but it is possibly a penny of Edward the Elder (AD 899 - 924), Portrait type, moneyer Framwis. North (1994) Volume 1 number 651 on page 127. It is 10.2mm long, 8mm wide and 0.7mm thick. It weighs 0.23g.

An incomplete pierced silver struck or hammered coin of Early Medieval date; a Primary Series A3 sceat, of BMC Type 2a dating from AD 680 - 700.
