An early medieval silver early penny (sceat) of Primary Phase Series BX or BI dating to c.AD675-690. Refs: Metcalf 1993: p.96-8; Naismith 2017: cf. no.44 (pl. 2). The identification above is based on the description in the numismatic data section. Another bird-on-cross type is the later Series J (type 85) although this is in a different style which does not appear to correlate to this coin find. Original record description: 'Bird on cross/bust - circa AD 680 - 750
