A slightly worn and bent, possibly irregular 11th-century silver late early-medieval penny of Edward the Confessor, 'Pyramids' type, struck by the moneyer Spracling probably at Winchester mint (c. 1065 - c. 1066 AD; North 831). Two small points of copper-alloy corrosion product on the obverse suggest that this coin might be a plated copy; they may simply be accretions. Although Spracling minted at London as well as Winchester (North 1994, 184, 186), only Winchester coins seem to have sufficiently elongated renderings of the moneyer's name to prevent space for the mint name. An incomplete early medieval silver halfpenny of Eadred (946-55), Two-Line/Horizontal type (HT1 var; North 722 HT 1 var.), moneyer: Mærtin, mint: probably either Winchester or Southampton (see below for discussion). Ref: North 1994: 143. The coin is chipped around the edge and is missing a small fragment from the outer circle. This coin appears to be the first of its type recorded for the moneyer Mærtin (or Martin), paralleled by one of Mangod which also has a flower/star-like object in the centre of the reverse. North (1994: 143) attributes this to the 'north-west' style,…

A worn and broken silver late early-medieval cut halfpenny of Edward the Confessor, 'pointed helmet' type (1053-1056 AD; North 825). Having been halved, this coin has since suffered a loss and has been bent almost in half and broken resulting in a further small loss. Whilst it is remarkable that both elements have been found and united, it is difficult to take the identification of mint and moneyer much further.
