Gold Gallic contemporary copy of a Solidus of Anastasius (491-518), possibly of the Pseudo-Merovingian coinage, c. 500-580. Copied from a coin of Constantinople. Found with associated Early Medieval finds from a ploughed cemetery site (Treasure case no. 2007 T203).
Note: the BM has 7 imitations of solidi of Anastasius, but none are very similar to this piece.

A complete early medieval silver penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (796-821), Early group dating to c. 798 mint: East Anglian mint (Ipswich?), moneyer: Lul (North 362; Naismith 2011: E10.1). Ref: North 1994: 94; Naismith 2011: pl. 77, no. E10.1f (this coin).
The reverse of the coin has been gilded with small patches surviving. The obverse remains without gilding and although there is no evidence for attachments to form a brooch fitting. The obverse shows greater wear than the reverse of the coin.
