The reverse shows the hand of providence issuing from clouds with AW to the sides and the legend + ÐEODGILD MO LIND (Theodgeld moneyer Lincoln mint). North 766.
The coin is complete but has a small area of the flan edge rolled over.

Veronica Smart, The Lincoln Mint c890-1279, Corbitt and Hunter Ltd, Newcastle upon Tyne, plate 75 nos. 6-31, plate 76 nos 1-14) illustrates a series by nine moneyers at Lincoln mint, which would be apt to this find spot. Nos 6, 9, 11-13, 17-20, and 25-27 supply apt obverse matches with regard to detail of the helmet.

Cnut's short cross coinage was struck between c.1029 and c.1036, and this coin corresponds to North number 790.

A silver penny of King Edgar, moneyer Grind, struck at Lincoln circa AD 973. The type is Edgar's 'Reform Portait' coinage. Ref: J.J. North, no. 752. The obverse appears to be from the same die as an example recorded on the Early Medieval Coin Corpus, no. 1004.0777, part of the Royal Collection, Copenhagen. The type is well known, and the moneyer Grind is known at Lincoln from the following two reigns as well, but the Copenhagen coin is the only recorded example of a coin in his name from Edgar's reform type (c. 973-75). A late Anglo-Saxon silver coin: an expanding cross type penny of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), a north east variety dating from 1050 - 1053 probably. Part of the rim of the flan is missing, between one o'clock and four o'clock on the obverse. It is 18.1mm in diameter and 0.7mm thick. It weighs 0.94gm. It was probably struck at Lincoln by Colgrim.
