Early medieval coin; Struck silver penny of Eadwald of East Anglia, moneyer Botred, dated to c796-c798 (by the postulated reign of Eadwald). The coin has been damaged while in the ground and a small section has been torn away and is missing.
Obv. The name of the king in three lines, divided by lines of pellets. The pellet lines each have a break in the centre and the ends of the lines at the break curl up into the top text space or down into the bottom text space resepectively. TREASURE ITEM 2011 T424: Complete pierced silver struck or hammered coin of Early Medieval date.
The coin is a Primary Series A3 Sceatta, Type 2a. The obverse shows a radiate bust right with TIC before and A and annulets behind with curved exurgual lines either side of the beaded line below. The reverse shows a beaded standard with Tufa and horns with TOTII legend. Minted AD. c.680-700.
In this case the 'TIC' before the bust and complete exergual decoration has been lost during striking. The piercing is a single hole located in front of the mouth of the bust.
