Only a small fragment of the coin remains, roughly a quarter which appears to have been intentionally cut. On the remaining reverse the corner of a church design can be seen. Mint uncertain. A more complete example can be found at LIN-F6C6E1. Discussion Coins of this type are unusual finds in the British Isles. Only three other deniers of Louis the Pious are recorded on the PAS database. An early-medieval to medieval silvered copper-alloy coin of uncertain type, probably a denier. The design is reminiscent of 10-12th century issues in France (royal and feudal) and others from the Low Countries but no parallel was found. The coin may be a base silver issue or a contemporary imitation. The coin is badly chipped lacking the outer edge and the inscription is either missing or worn.
