Silver short cross penny of uncertain ruler 1180-1247. The coin has been poorly struck with the best preserved face being the obverse. The reverse is a mirror negative image of the obverse and none of the lower die impression survives. This has been caused by the moneyer making a mistake during striking. The moneyer has not removed the previous struck coin from the die, which has stuck to the lower part of the die, and then been over-struck by this coin. This has resulted in a good obverse impression and the details of the other coin being impresssed in the negative on the reverse.
