Lead alloy coin. An unusual variant of sceat; perhaps associated with the manufacture and distribution of fake Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon coins. These are thought to be made in the Grimsby area and are distributed in areas frequented by metal-detector users across northern parts of Lincolnshire. A circular flan of diameter 10.6mm, from its reverse cast onto a smooth flat surface, appears to have been struck by a smaller die with a protruding outer edge, forming a uniface 'coin' of diameter 8.6mm standing proud of the flan. A finely rendered motif comprises a swastika with arms rightw…

An error report was submitted in 2013 by Mr Paul Cannon with an alternative identification for this object. He suggest that it could be a cast copper alloy coin from Morocco. "Crudely cast in moulds most have the 'seal of Soloman' (six pointed star) on one face and a date plus sometimes other information on the opposite face. There are however types with the six pointed star on both faces. For example see W H Valentine "Modern Copper Coins of the Muhammadan States" (1911) pp 58 & 59 for these undated types." Paramdip Khera of the British Museum confirms that Moroccan coins issued unde…

A probably modern imitation lead alloy coin in the form of an Early Medieval silver coin. The piece appears to be inspired by a coin of Eadgar (959 - 975), Pre-reform two line type (959 - 973). It is very similar to North number 741, but the moneyer's name is 'NORB/ER' which is not one of the listed possibilities. The finder has had the piece tested using XRF and it is made of a high lead alloy. The crosses in the design seem thinner and cruder than the illustrated genuine coins. The piece is 22.63mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 3.9g.

A modern forgery of a silver hammered saxon penny. The coin is a copy of Edward the Elder Tower type (North reference 666 - AD899-924). Cu-alloy token or counter dating from the late 18th century. The major series of these cu-alloy tokens or counters which are depicting Queen Anne appears to have been struck in Birmingham during the reign of George III. Counters of that class bear designs based on Queen Anne's shillings and sixpences: all bear the pre-Union form of shields...and show the mis-spelling 'RIG' for 'REG' which can be seen on this counter, too. Observed dates for pieces run from 1702-1774. This one is dated '1771'.
