An incomplete Early Medieval Arabic coin: a fragment of a silver dirham probably dating from about AD 750 - 950. Ruler and mint uncertain. Coins of this type are known to have circulated across Europe during the later Early Medieval period and have been found as part of Viking hoards discovered in England. They are often found with other objects which suggest an Early Medieval trading site, so this fragment could be ancient loss. Dirhams can also be an indicator of a Viking Great Army camp site. Early Medieval Corpus 2022.0369 Full ID kindly supplied by Dr. Marcus Phillips who comments: This is s silver dirham of the Samanid ruler Ahmad II b. Isma'il  295-301/907-914; citing the caliph al-Muktafi billah 289-295/AD902-907. The Caliph's name is on the third line of the central reverse inscription; the Samanid's is on the fourth line. The mint is al Shash (modern Tashkent). The date is not fully legible but since these two rulers only overlap in 295H it can only be that year.  T…

Obverse description:Three horizontal lines of Arabic text  with two borders of text around the edge Reverse description:Four horizontal lines of Arabic text with a single outer border of text on the edge. Other dirhams found in/near this area are SWYOR-879A35, SWYOR-8797D2, SWYOR-5667E6 and SWYOR-89C183, so this example is probably of a similar date. Coins of this type of often found with other objects which suggest an Early Medieval trading site, and so this fragment is probably an ancient loss. Dirhams can also be an indicator of a Viking Great Army camp site. The fragment is 12.6mm long, 11.1mm wide and 0.56mm thick. 0.3g.

Early Medieval plated contemporary copy of a Dirham of Abbasid, Hârûn ar-Rashîd 170-193 AH./786-809AD. and Da'ûd, an unidentified official found on Dirham with the mint name al-Muhammadîya 170-174, 182-186 The coin was a product of the same area as the official coinage and appears to be quite rare.
