Copper alloy six deniers piece or dardenne of Louis XIV of France (1661-1715), minted at La Rochelle, a seaport on the Bay of Biscay in western France, between 1710-1712, mis-struck so that is it now off-centre. This type was designed to consume locally mined copper along with scrap bronze and brass from cannons from the naval arsenals in Toulon and Marseilles to pay off soldiers serving there. Copper alloy coin, a ceitil (sixth of a real) of John I (1385-1433) of Portugal. The obverse shows the crowned letters 'IhNS' within an octofoil border. The obverse legend reads: ADIVTORIVM:NOSTRVM but half of it is missing. The reverse shows the Portuguese arms, a cross of shields with a castle in each angle. The reverse legend should read: IHNS:DEI:GRA:REX:PO:A. See coins of John I shown in C M Almeida do Amaral (1977), Catalogo descritivo das moedas Portuguesas, Nos.938 and 949.
