A gold 'Chute' stater of the Belgae dating to c 65-40 BC. The obverse depicts a wreath, cloak and crescents. The reverse depicts a disjoined horse facing left, body of crescents, four vertical legs, crab below and many pellets above. Obverse: Abstract head of Apollo facing right
Reverse: Disjointed horse going left
Coins of this type were produced in the Dorset-Wiltshire-Isle of Wight area in around 80-60 BC. During the late Iron Age this area is thought to have been inhabited by a people known as the Durotriges.
