An early-medieval gold shilling (also known as a 'thrymsa') of the Witmen Group, possibly 'Witmen prototype' or 'Witmen derived 1' dating to c. 620-45. Ref: Naismith 2017: 52; Gannon 2013: no 11; cf. Metcalf 1993: 57-9, nos 1-2. Obverse: No legend. Bust right draped and wearing diadem with two ties; in front a trident. Reverse: VVITMENMONITA (or devolved version thereof). Cross with three limbs bifurcated and lower limb terminating in small semi-circle, within dotted circle. The coin is 12mm in diameter and weighs 1.28g.
