There has been much debate about when silver siliquae were clipped. However, analysis of the Terling Hoard suggests a date after AD 404. Some feel that it could have been slightly earlier, after 402, when the mint of Milan ceased to strike siliquae. It might have started in the reign of Constantine III, 407-11, when the Province of Britannia finally collapsed. The clippings were apparently used to make copies of siliquae – of the same quality silver. Over 100 silver siliquae have been recorded on the PAS database – this has been a crucial addition to our knowledge of late Roman Britain because prior to AD 2000 very few were known as site-finds. This suggests that siliquae circulated as normal currency, possibly for some time after the Roman administration ceased c. AD 410. When one considers that a very large number of bronze coins were found with clipped siliquae in the Bishops Cannings hoard, it is possible that bronze coins also continued to circulate in numbers after 410.London BoroughCertain11428SUR1077214.11363West Wickhamx41218263533821.51arelateBromley11728Siliqua2011-02-24T13:22:54ZReturned to finderLondonCertainA clipped siliqua of Julian II as Augustus, 360-3, Mint of Arles

The majority of the gold and silver coins spanned a period from the mid first century BC until the mid 2nd century AD. As such this group of late Roman silver siliquae stand out as a distinct group within the collection, dating to the mid 4th century AD. In terms of condition and date they form a convincing hoard (as such they form Treasure Case 2005 T199).
The earliest issues were struck during the last decade of the reign of Constantius II (AD 323-361), with the latest precisely datable coins being two coins of Valentinian I and one of Valens, both produced between AD 364 and 367. A single irregular, imitation siliqua of Julian (AD 360-363) may date to any time after AD 360, so pushing the terminus post quem of this date beyond that supplied by the other coins. The absence, however, of issues of the emperors Theodosius, Arcadius and Honorius might lead us to place the deposition date not long after AD 367.
In respect to its profile and date, an exact parallel for this find can be found in the much larger hoard from West Bagborough, in Somerset, which included siliqua of a similar date range and also included irregular siliqua copies.
