A largely complete copper alloy nummus of Constantine I (306-337). Obverse type: Consular - bust left, laureate, wearing trabea, with eagle headed sceptre. Reverse type: VTILITAS PVBLICA. Mass 2.6g. Diameter 22.0mm. Coin reference: RIC volume VII (1966), number 51, p.238. AD313-315. Arles mint. The National Finds Adviser believes that the figures on the reverse of the coin are Roma holding Victory on a globe and Moneta, rather than a soldier and Utilitas (as noted in RIC). This rare coin shows that the Roman authorities did strike coins for public benefit, rather than just to pay off …
