Roman copper-alloy nummus of Constantine I dating to the period AD 308 to 309 (Reece period 15). PRINCIPI-IV-VENTVTIS Prince standing facing, head left in military dress, holding standard in each hand. Minted at Lyon. RIC VI, p. 264, no. 299. The coin has a patch of silver metal visible at 4 o'clock on the obverse. Nummi of this period were agentiferous copper alloy, ie they contained a small content of silver (decreasing from 4% in AD 307 to 1.5% in AD 310). A very worn, overcleaned copper-alloy nummus of an uncertain tetrarchic ruler, dating to AD 294-307 (Reece Period 15). Reverse: probably GENIO POPVLI ROMANI. Possibly mint of Lyon. This coin has been pierced, presumably for use as a jewellery item at a later date. Although this practice occurred in the Roman period it is most commonly documented as an early-medieval practice. The piercing respects neither obverse or reverse designs.
