A milled tin farthing of Charles II (c. AD 1660 - 1685), possibly minted between 1684-1685. Obverse with laureate and cuirassed bust of Charles II left. Reverse with Britannia, seated on globe with shield, facing left, holding spray and spear. The centre has the copper plug intact. The coin has suffered metal corrosion typical of tin, it has a dull grey patina and begun to delaminate. Measurements - Diameter = 23.8mm, thickness = 2.37mm, weight = 5.1gm. Tin farthings were first issued in 1684 to help boost the tin industry, with the copper alloy plug intending to discourage forgery…

A complete tin farthing of Charles II (AD 1660-1685), dating to AD 1684-1685. The tin farthing is complete although the copper alloy plug is mostly missing from the centre. The coin is in quite good condition however the inscription around the edge of the coin is largely unreadable. Tin farthings were first issued in 1684 to help boost the tin industry, with the copper alloy plug intending to discourage forgery but it failed in its purpose (http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/farth.html). Charles II died in February 1685 so coins of this date are quite rare. Spink (2011) No. 3395.

A worn but complete tin farthing of William and Mary, dating to the post-medieval period. There is a copper plug in the centre of the coin, that was inserted in an attempt to curb counterfeiting. The date on the coin is worn and cannot be read, but these were issued between AD 1689 and 1692.
