A very worn, damaged and slightly bent 16th-century base-silver (billon) post-medieval douzain of Pope Clement VIII (1592-1605 AD), Type III or IV, struck for the Papal City State of Avignon (1594-1599 AD). The circumference is ragged in places following old cracks and damage. This coin has received a counterstamp on the reverse. Such a countermark of a fleur de lis in oval of pellets revalued the coin at 15 deniers under Louis XIII during the ordinance of June 1640. This was often for use in the overseas colonies.
