Fragment of a post medieval copper alloy Spanish Netherlands escalin (half testoon) of Philip IV (1621-1665). The obverse has a rampant lion with a sword and shield and the legend P[HIL IIII D.G.HISP ET.] INDIAR.REX. The reverse has the arms of Spain and the legend [ARCHID AVS] DVX BVRG BRA [Zc]. The date appears either side of the central arms but only the first part (16) survives. It is possible that this is a contemporary forgery that would originally have been silvered. A post medieval silver Spanish Netherlands escalin of Philip IV, dating to AD 1645. Obverse depicting a rampant lion with sword and shield. Reverse depicting the crowned shield of Philip IV superimpared on St. Andrew's cross. There is a piercing at 12 o'clock, measuring 2.35mm in diameter.
