Early Roman copper alloy denarius of Commodus dating from c. AD192. RIC 3 (Commodus), 237.
A metallurgical analysis would be useful to see if there is any silver present. If it is entirely of base metal, then its purpose will certainly have been votive. A number of similar examples from the Maryport area were recorded (in the Netherhall collection; not the PAS database), though they have since disappeared.

A Roman coin; a silver denarius of Commodus (177-192AD). There is a small chip out of the flan at 7 o'clock on the obverse and a small amount of a black deposit on the reverse. It is 15.6mm in diameter and 2mm thick. It weighs 2.06gm. This coin is not listed in Sear, but the design matches that of the gold aureus at reference number 5574.
