?denarius forgery - metal looks like copper alloy, coin details probably a denarius and the emperor (perhaps Elagabalus, though legend fragment could be Severus or Caracalla) apparently has a Vesta reverse (normally imperial ladies at this date). The margins of the coin are corroded, and there is some iron stained concretion on the surfaces.

Roman coin, denarius. The coin appears to have been subjected to heat. The reverse is melted obscuring the whole design. The obverse shows a bare head facing right, probably Augustus, 27BC-AD14. This side has also been heat affected and, although the portrait is clear, most of the legend is obscured. The letters ...CA.. (from CAESAR) can be made out to the left of the head. There are two large nicks on the edge. Weight 2.28g, maximum diameter c.18.4mm, thickness c.2.0mm.

Roman silver Denarius of Elagabalus. The reverse is a depiction of Felicity standing left. Elagablus' reign was notorious for religious fanaticism, cruelty, bloodshed, and general excess and when Elagabalus and his mother were murdered in 222 many people in the Roman Empire were relieved. Their bodies were dragged through the streets of Rome and were thrown into the river Tiber (Sear 1981, page 211).
