A Roman silver coin: a denarius of Septimus Severus (AD193-211), Two Captives under a trophy, PART ARAB PART ADIAB COSS II PP reverse type, dating from 195 AD. There is a small chip from the flan at six o'clock on the obverse. It is 17.2mm in diameter and 1.9mm thick. It weighs 2.55gm. It is possible that the coin is a contemporary plated copy. Compare Sear Volume II number 6322 for the reverse legend and 6323 for the reverse design.

A Roman silver coin: a contemporary plated copy of a denarius of Vespasian (AD69-79), COS ITER TR POT reverse type showing Pax seated. The core is copper alloy, plated with silver, some of which has now flaked away to reveal the inner metal. The obverse is central, but the reverse is struck somewhat off centre. It is 18.9mm in diameter and 2.2mm thick. It weighs 2.31gm. Compare Sear Volume II number 2285.

The coin reverse shows Dea Caelestis holding a thunderbolt and sceptre seated facing forwards on a lion leaping over water which gushes from a rock on the left. See Sear number 6285. Sear notes (under entry 6201): "This type of coin records some special mark of favour shown by the emperors to Carthage, capital of Severus' native province.
