A silver Roman coin; a denarius of the Republic (269BC - 30BC), Series 20 (119BC - 110BC). The moneyer signed the coin "Q METE" standing for Q Metellus. He is not easy to identify, but is believed to be a junior member of the Metelli family who were at the height of their power at the time. The coin is marked with an asterix; a monogram of XVI. This was added to denarii coins to show that they were worth 16 Asses. Previously they had been worth only 10 Asses. Pax is shown on the reverse. The coin has a diameter of 19.5mm. The coin is sealed in a coin envelope so it's thickness and weight cannot be ascertained. The legends are illegible. There is a bearded bust right on the obverse. The reverse shows shows the top half of a standing figure facing left. Dimensions: Diameter 17.8mm, thickness 1.6mm, weight 0.90g.
