An incomplete plated silver Roman denarius, contemporary copy of a coin of Caracalla (AD 198-217), probably dating to the period c.AD 198-217 (Reece period 10). PROVID AVGG reverse type depicting Providentia standing left holding sceptre and wand over globe. Prototype of the mint of Rome. The copper-alloy core is visible on both faces where the silver plating has corroded or been damaged. This is a plated silver copy combining an obverse of Caracalla dating to c.AD 198-210 and a reverse type probably of Septimius Severus (AD 196-211), dating to the period c.AD 197-210. cf. R…

An incomplete Roman silver plated denarius of Julia Mamea dating to the period c. AD 221 - 235 (Reece Period 11). Uncertain reverse type. Uncertain mint. Measurements: diameter: 18.15mm; thickness: 1.35mm and weight:1.17g. The reverse and broken edges of the flan has traces of green copper-alloy corrosion. The edge of the flan has a waisted notch at 7 O'clock on the obverse, probably from the creation of a pierced hole for suspension, but where the outer edge has broken away.

The coin shows significant copper corrosion product on both sides. If the coin was a contemporary copy and silver plated or washed, this would be in evidence at the through-thickness edge cracks.
