A silver Roman denarius of the Civil Wars, c.AD 68 (Reece period 3). PACI P R revese type depictign Clasped hands holding winged caduceus. This rare piece was struck between April and June AD 68 by Galba in Spain. Galba had agreed to join the revolt against Nero so started to strike coins. Some of the early coins did bear his name and portrait, but others looked back to the past. One issue bore the head of Augustus. This particular coin is copied from a Republican coin of L. The reverse shows a trophy with carnyx and oval shield on each arm; beneath on left is seated female captive resting head on right hand; beneath on right is a bearded captive seated with hands tied behind back. It is suggested that the captives are Gauls. Caesar's conquest of
Gaul took from 58 to 52 BC.
