Silver denarius of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14) Obverse: IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG; Laureate, draped and cuirassed right Reverse: CONCORDIA MTLITVM; Clasped hands Mintmark: RSR 20mm; 4.15g RIC V, pt 2, - This is the third specimen of coin with this reverse type - all three coins share the same reverse die. Note that MILITVM is incorrectly spelt as MTLITVM. One is in Paris and the other was sold at UBS 78 (9 9 2008), lot 1928. This coin shares the same obverse die as the UBS piece.

Silver denarius of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14), EXPECTA[TE VE]N(I), Britannia standing right, holding vertical sceptre, clasping hands of emperor, standing left, holding vertical sceptre. Mintmark - // (RSR).  There are possibly punctuation marks with the RSR mark. The coin is unusual style but is probably an official issue.  It is the ninth example of this coin which the author has recorded. The diameter is 18.8mm, the thickness is 1.2mm, weight is 3.0g

Silver denarius of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14), NE[VENTV]S? or NE[....] (AVG??), Emperor riding left, raising right hand and holding short sceptre. Mintmark - // O (O or W?). RIC V, pt 2 - It is quite possible that this is a base silver contemporary copy of an ADVENTVS AVG denarius of Carausius, a type which is common.  There is another similar coin with legend NEVENTVS NI[ ], and mintmark RSR, in the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge) which might share the same source - it also is a rather crude piece.  Both coins do need XRF analysis to determine silver content.&nb…

Silver denarius of Pertinax (AD 193) (Reece Period 10), VOT DECEN TR P COS II, Emperor, veiled, standing left, sacrificing with patera over tripod. Mint of Rome. RIC IV, pt 1, p. 8, no. 13a. Pertinax only ruled for three months and his coins are subsequently rare. There are fifteen coins for him on the PAS Database with ten denarii from England. This is the second example of this coin recorded - see BERK-DF2625.

This is the third known specimen of this type in Sam Moorhead's corpus for a new RIC volume on Carausius and Allectus, the other two coins (one in the Ashmolean; the other Spink 8006, 27 3 2008, lot 1152) sharing the same dies as this coin.
